Sat Sri Akal! 🙏
Welcome back to our Punjabi learning journey.
In Lesson 1, we learned greetings and how to ask someone how they are.
Today, we’re going to learn numbers from 1 to 10 in Punjabi — something you’ll use all the time.
🗣 1. Numbers in Punjabi
| Number | Punjabi (Gurmukhi) | Punjabi (Romanized) | Pronunciation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ਇੱਕ | ikk | ik |
| 2 | ਦੋ | do | doh |
| 3 | ਤਿੰਨ | tinn | tin |
| 4 | ਚਾਰ | chaar | chaar |
| 5 | ਪੰਜ | panj | panjj |
| 6 | ਛੇ | chhe | chhey |
| 7 | ਸੱਤ | satt | sut |
| 8 | ਅੱਠ | ath | utth |
| 9 | ਨੌਂ | nau(n) | now (nasal ‘n’) |
| 10 | ਦੱਸ | dass | dass |
💡 Note: The “(n)” in nau(n) means you make the sound through your nose — this nasal tone is common in Punjabi.
🗣 2. Using Numbers in Everyday Life
Here are some simple ways you might use numbers:
Example 1:
- English: I want two apples.
- Punjabi: ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਸੇਬ ਚਾਹੀਦੇ ਹਨ। (Mainu do seb chahide han.)
Example 2:
- English: Give me one cup of tea.
- Punjabi: ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਕੱਪ ਚਾਹ ਦਿਓ। (Mainu ikk cup chaah dio.)
Example 3:
- English: We are five people.
- Punjabi: ਅਸੀਂ ਪੰਜ ਬੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। (Asin panj bande haan.)
✏️ Practice Exercise
- Count from 1 to 10 out loud in Punjabi.
- Count backwards from 10 to 1.
- Look around your home and name 3 things, saying their number in Punjabi.
- Example: Do kursian (two chairs), chhey kitaaban (six books).
🎯 Key Takeaway
Learning numbers helps you shop, order food, talk about people, and describe daily life.
By practicing them in real conversations, they’ll stick in your memory faster.
