The imperative is used to give orders, instructions, or strong advice.
In Punjabi, it’s usually formed with the verb stem + ending depending on tone (soft, neutral, or strong).
2️⃣ Forms of Commands
- Neutral / Direct Command – Verb stem only
- Polite Command – Verb stem + “ਓ” (o)
- Strong Command – Verb stem + “ਣਾ” (nā)
3️⃣ Examples
- ਬੈਠੋ।
Baiṭho.
→ Sit (polite). - ਸੁਣ।
Suṇ.
→ Listen (direct). - ਚੁੱਪ ਕਰਨਾ!
Chupp karna!
→ Be quiet! (strong). - ਚੱਲੋ!
Challo!
→ Let’s go! (polite/encouraging).
4️⃣ Instructions in Everyday Life
- ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਖੋਲ੍ਹੋ।
Darvāzā kholho.
→ Open the door. - ਕਿਤਾਬ ਪੜ੍ਹੋ।
Kitāb paṛho.
→ Read the book. - ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣੋ।
Dhiān nāl suṇo.
→ Listen carefully.
5️⃣ Politeness Tip
In daily life, imperatives can sound too strong. To soften them, add:
- ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ (please)
- or say it gently with ਜੀ (e.g., ਬੈਠੋ ਜੀ).
