1️⃣ Using “ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ”
The phrase ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ means should / must / need to.
It agrees with the gender and number of the object, not the subject.
2️⃣ Structure
Object + ਚਾਹੀਦਾ/ਚਾਹੀਦੀ/ਚਾਹੀਦੇ + ਹੈ/ਹਨ
3️⃣ Examples
- ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਾਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
Mainū pāṇī chāhīdā hai.
→ I need water. - ਉਸਨੂੰ ਮਦਦ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ।
Usnū madad chāhīdī hai.
→ He/She needs help. - ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਚਾਹੀਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
Sānū do kitābāṅ chāhīdīāṅ han.
→ We need two books.
4️⃣ Obligations (Should / Must)
When expressing duties or obligations, ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ works like should/must:
- ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਿੱਖਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ।
Tuhānū Panjabi sikhṇī chāhīdī hai.
→ You should learn Punjabi. - ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਮੇਂ ‘ਤੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
Sānū samēṅ ‘te jāṇā chāhīdā hai.
→ We must go on time.
